Thomas Schanzer
Bio
Thomas started his PhD at the UNSW Climate Change Research Centre in 2024 under the supervision of Prof. Steven Sherwood and Dr. Tim Raupach. He uses cloud-resolving simulations to investigate the physical mechanisms that govern convective downdrafts (strong localised downward air currents), ultimately aiming to improve the way downdrafts are approximately accounted for (parametrised) in lower-resolution atmospheric models. Thomas graduated with a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) from UNSW in 2023, majoring in physics. His Honours project developed a proof of concept for data-driven parametrisation in a simplified model of convection and was also supervised by Prof. Steven Sherwood.
