Dr Michael Barnes
Bio
Michael Barnes was awarded a PhD in Meteorology by the University of Pretoria in 2021. He is a Research Fellow based at Monash University with the ARC Centre of Excellence for 21st Century Weather and with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes. His research interests include all things weather, meteorology and climate and the atmospheric processes underpinning them and their predictability on a range of timescales. His current focus is on synoptic-scale atmospheric dynamics including Rossby waves, extratropical cyclones and cut-off lows. Michael also has experience in applied and operational meteorology, serving as an operational weather forecaster and a research scientist at the South African Weather Service, being involved in developing the first operational coastal wave, tide and storm surge model for South Africa.
