Professor Christian Jakob
Bio
Christian (he/him) is the Director of 21st Century Weather. Christian trained as a meteorologist and received his PhD from the Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, in 2001. He started his career as a weather modeller for the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts from 1993 to 2001. In 2002 he moved to the Bureau of Meteorology to actually observe the tropical clouds he had been modelling back in Europe. In this role he co-led the Tropical Warm Pool International Cloud Experiment in Darwin. He joined Monash University in 2007, where he soon developed a passion for bringing ideas from different areas of weather and climate research together. Prior to leading the successful bid for the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Weather of the 21st Century, Christian was the Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science as well as Chief Investigator of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes. He has also held various leadership positions in the World Climate Research Programme and has been a Lead Author on the 5th Assessment report of the IPCC.
