Authorship & Acknowledgement Policy

21st Century Weather has a team-based approach to research, and most of our research and other publications are authored by multiple people across multiple institutes, including our partner institutions and wider collaborative networks.

The Centre’s authorship policy is to err on the side of generosity in offering authorship. The offer of authorship extends to all members, including researchers and Research Software Engineers (RSEs), who may have contributed to the realisation of the research.

In particular, where research would not have been achieved, or not achieved in a timely manner, without bespoke assistance from a particular person and a substantial investment of their time, co-authorship should be offered.

If the support was primarily technical or editorial, such as maintenance of existing tools or user support without intellectual input into the project’s research questions, an acknowledgement in the publication may be sufficient.

Example acknowledgement

We thank [Name] for technical support, including the development and maintenance of the analysis workflows used in this study.

If the tools used have a DOI, they should also be cited.

Authorship guidance

We encourage Centre members to refer to the authorship policies of major journals, including the American Geophysical Union (AGU), as well as the Centre’s Code of Ethics.

Fair treatment includes offering collaborative research roles to people who:

  • Contributed to the conception or design of the work
  • Undertook model development essential to the research
  • Acquired, analysed or interpreted data for the research

Appropriate acknowledgement of the contributions of others is always expected.

Acknowledging 21st Century Weather in publications

Research outputs arising from Centre projects may acknowledge the Centre in two ways:

  • In the author byline
  • In the acknowledgements section

Users of ACCESS-NRI models, data, tools and expert support are required to include an acknowledgement in all publications, reports and public releases.

Correct acknowledgement helps ACCESS-NRI demonstrate its impact, understand how its infrastructure is being used and recognise the value of Australia’s climate, weather and Earth system simulator.

The American Geophysical Union expects authors to:
